Salve Making with Jodi McKee
Time & Location
About The Event
There was a time when making medicine was as common as cooking. Often herbal healing recipes were handed down from generation to generation in the family cookbook. Most of us have lost that connection to our ancestors. This class will teach the forgotten art of salve making.
Salves help soothe skin irritation, dryness and deeper tissue inflammation. They are portable, easy to make and use, non-toxic and effective. Salves are made in two steps. The first is to prepare an infused oil. We use the oil to extract the healing constituents from the plant including essential oils, resins and much more (similar to the way we use water to extract the beneficial constituents from the plants to make tea). Not all plants make great salves, as not all plants have properties that are extracted easily by oil. Next we use beeswax for its healing properties and to firm up the oil into a salve.
We will be working with organically grown or wildcrafted plant material and organic oils. We will learn through demonstration and hands-on experimentation. Follow up learning will be done at home to complete the project. All supplies will be provided. We will also get to know the medicinal uses of the plant and how to effectively apply your freshly crafted medicine.
This is a gateway class opening you to the potential of the healing plant world. Included in the class will be access to detail written instructions, folk uses of common salves as well as resources for further learning.
