About The Event

There was a time when making medicine was as common as cooking. Often herbal healing recipes were handed down from generation to generation in the family cookbook. Most of us have lost that connection to our ancestors. This class will teach the forgotten art of tincture making.

Tinctures are easy to prepare and use for beginners in their home kitchens. You can get extra fancy and weigh out your herbs, using specialized equipment, but in my experience the simple medicine made with your own hands in your own kitchen is very powerful. I teach what is referred to as the Simpler’s Method or the Traditional Method. Herbal medicinals produced this way have a long history of use. Tinctures have an extended shelf life and are convenient to administer. When preparing a tincture we use a solvent to extract the healing constituents from the plant (similar to the way we use water to extract the beneficial constituents from plants to make tea). In this class we will be making an alcohol based tincture as this is what I most often use myself. I like the neutral flavor that allows the plant to come through and the milder taste is palatable for my family.

We will be working with organically grown Tulsi (aka Holy Basil). We will learn through demonstration and hands-on experimentation. Follow up learning will be done at home to complete the project. All supplies will be included. The class will also cover the traditional medicinal uses of the Tulsi and how to effectively apply your freshly crafted medicine.

This is a gateway class opening you to the potential of the healing plant world. Included in the class will be access to detail written instructions + resources for further learning.

Tulsi or Holy Basil: Tulsi, also known as Holy Basil, is known as a sacred plant around the world with over 3000 years of use. Tulsi is an adaptogen, which means that it helps us adapt to stress while supporting every major system in the body. It makes a delicious tincture with many practical uses.
